For visitors who want to do more than just walk around Wanaka, Eco Wanaka Adventure's heli-hikes offer a great way to explore the area and the company's two heli-hike tours offer excitement and great views.
The Alpine Lakes heli-hike begins with a short helicopter flight that ends 1400 metres above the Matukituki Valley on a ridge bordering Mount Aspiring National Park. From this vantage point, visitors can appreciate Mount Aspiring in all its snow-capped glory as well as the surrounding glaciers and three alpine lakes.
A two-hour hike takes walkers through alpine tussocks and past clear blue lakes. There is plenty of time here to take photographs while an experienced guide explains more about the area and shares some of its history and stories.
On the return flight, you have another specacular alpine landing for a brief photo opportunity before heading back to Wanaka.
Lord of the Rings fans might like to try the "Misty Mountains" Heli-Hike that not only offers great views, but also takes in many of the locations used in filming The Lord of the Rings Trilogy.

The "Misty Mountains" trip includes 3 helicopter flights and 2 alpine landings.
$700 per person. Minimum 2 people to operate.
Both trips are seasonal and generally run from November to April.
